Professional Biography of Professor Padet Siriyasatien, M.D., Ph.D.
Professor Padet Siriyasatien, M.D., Ph.D., is a prominent researcher, educator, and leader in the field of parasitology and vector-borne diseases. Currently serving as Professor of Parasitology at the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, Professor Siriyasatien has dedicated his career to advancing the understanding of parasitic diseases and their vectors.

Educational Background
Professor Siriyasatien graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Entomology from Kasetsart University in 1988. He earned his M.D. from Chulalongkorn University in 1993 and a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) from Mahidol University in 1994. He completed his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Immunology at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom, in 2000.

Research Contributions
Professor Siriyasatien’s research encompasses a wide range of parasitic and vector-borne diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, Zika, leishmaniasis, and filariasis. He has contributed significantly to the fields of vector biology, molecular diagnostics, and disease epidemiology. Key highlights of his research include:

  • Vector Biology and Disease Transmission: His studies have provided insights into the salivary gland proteins of mosquito vectors, their roles in disease transmission, and strategies for vector control. His work on genetically modified mosquitoes has advanced potential disease mitigation strategies.
  • Molecular Diagnostics: He has developed molecular tools for the detection of pathogens in vectors and hosts, such as multiplex PCR methods for blood meal analysis in mosquitoes and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for Leishmania detection.
  • Epidemiology and Public Health: His work has improved the understanding of the prevalence and dynamics of parasitic and viral infections in Thailand. This includes studies on the transmission dynamics of dengue, Zika virus, and leishmaniasis.
  • Drug Development and Testing: He has been involved in evaluating the efficacy of antileishmanial drugs, contributing to treatment strategies for parasitic infections.

Academic and Leadership Roles
Since joining Chulalongkorn University in 1993, Professor Siriyasatien has held several key academic positions, including Assistant Dean for Quality Assurance Affairs and Chair of various graduate programs in parasitology and medical sciences. He has served as the Head of the Department of Parasitology multiple times, most recently since 2016.

Publications and Impact
Professor Siriyasatien has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles and several book chapters, addressing critical topics in tropical medicine and public health. His work has been published in prestigious journals such as Clinical Infectious Diseases, BMC Microbiology, and PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. His research is widely cited and has influenced both national and international strategies for disease prevention and control.
Awards and Recognition
An esteemed figure in his field, Professor Siriyasatien is a member of professional organizations such as the Parasitology and Tropical Medicine Association of Thailand, where he has contributed to advancing academic excellence and public health initiatives.

Global Contributions
He has participated in international collaborations and training programs, sharing his expertise in tropical diseases and vector biology. His work continues to impact global health by addressing challenges posed by emerging and re-emerging diseases in tropical regions.

Legacy
Through his research, leadership, and dedication to education, Professor Padet Siriyasatien has significantly advanced the field of parasitology and tropical medicine. His contributions continue to shape the understanding and control of parasitic diseases worldwide.
